the commons and your bookmarks

Due Tues 20100126 by 8AM

Reading: Read through the Creative Commons website. Be thorough.

Activity: Your first activity for this semester is to socialize your bookmarks.

Wait! Come back! That's not what I meant!

I meant to say that you need to turn your bookmarks into a social resource. We'll use the social bookmarking service delicious.com.

install firefox

You need to be using Firefox. Why? Because it has lots of awesome extensions. If you use some other web browser, and it allows you to post your bookmarks to delicious, then you may use that browser. Otherwise, go get Firefox, and don't complain.

create an account

First, create an account. You can use your own name, your Allegheny username, or perhaps something else entirely. Whatever you pick, I'd like to ask that you stick with it for any and all services we use throughout this semester. (For example, my username on delicious, as well as most all online services, is jadudm.)

install the delicious plugin

Go to the Firefox plugins site and install the delicious bookmarks plugin. It is awesome. You may need to restart Firefox.

hit ctrl-d and start bookmarking

Once you have everything installed, you should be able to bookmark new pages directly to delicious.

When you use delicious to bookmark things, I recommend always doing the following:

  1. Make a quick note about the site. This makes it easier to search your bookmarks later.

  2. Add some tags. For example, above you can see that I bookmarked the Firefox extension page for this plugin. I  tagged it fs102 and firefox. This way, I can later look through my bookmarks using the tags I created as a guide.

did it work?

If everything worked, you can visit http://delicious.com/yourusername and see the bookmarks appear. Sometimes it takes a few minutes, but they'll show up.

bookmark some activist resources

Now, go find one or more sites on activism that you think could be of value to this class. Bookmark them in delicious and tag those things techandactivism.

If we all use the tag techandactivism, we can then go into delicious and search for everything that has that tag. We'll learn a bit more about the technologies involved, but the first step is acting as a coordinated group.

when you are done

Email me the link to your delicious account.
