Wednesday (S7)

How stale is your brain?

Read the first chapter of WOTSOTH

Then, read two other chapters. Keep track of which two you read. There are ten chapters—pick two, and read them. Pick the two that you think might apply most to you.

What do you want to do?

The reason for developing Third Thursdays is that they provide members of the Allegheny and Meadville communities the opportunity to teach and share with each-other. But... what do we want to do?

Do some searching of the 'net. You might start by searching for "makerspace," which will introduce you to makerspaces or hackerspaces—communities of people who get together to build cool stuff and learn together.

From there, identify people doing interesting things in these communities, and find where they community. They might have blogs, or Twitter feeds, YouTube channels, Google+ circles... who knows? Identify how and where they communicate, and start building up a collection of URLs. You might put them in a Google Document, for example. (Be prepared to share what you found. That link is a video about how you can create links in a Google Document, by-the-way.)

Come prepared to discuss.

Come to class Monday ready to discuss along two broad themes:

① What are the ways that we keep ourselves from being creative? Specifically, what are ways that you keep yourself from being creative? What are some examples, and how can we avoid limiting ourselves this term?

② Who is out there getting things done, and what are some things that you thought were really awesome? Were there any projects you (1) thought were really cool, but (2) for one reason or another could never imagine doing? Why? Who inspired you most of the makers and innovators that you found?

You should all end up with a Google Document with 5-10 URLs in it, and possibly a few notes about each one. That would, you know, give us anywhere from 45 to 150 links to potentially cool projects we could undertake... not shabby for one weekend's worth of work.

We'll also discuss the prompt "What Can You Contribute?" This will be the first piece of writing we do this semester.
