This is a popular interview question amongst college admissions types, at job interviews, and who knows where else. Fundamentally, the question asks several questions, all at once:
① Who are you? What about you is interesting and, from the questioner's point of view, worthwhile?
② What are your passions? What drives you to excel, to rise beyond the everyday?
③ What do you know about the place you are in? To contribute, you must have some understanding of both self and the place you hope to make a contribution. Therefore, the question also asks "how much research and reflection have you done about the place you are looking to join?"
So: what do you want your contribution to be here, at Allegheny College, during the next four years? How will you achieve that? What resources will you need? How will you obtain them? Perhaps most importantly: how will you know you've succeeded?
Your essay should be roughly 2 pages long; it might be longer, I doubt it will be shorter. (No longer than 3 pages, though, please.)
